Honest breakdown

When each option is actually the right call.

Wix / Squarespace

Right when: budget is zero and you have a weekend.

If you have $200 and zero monthly budget for a service, Wix or Squarespace will get you online. You will spend a weekend in their editor, you will end up with a site that looks like 200 other small businesses in the same template, and you will not rank for local searches. But you will be online. That is real.

The problem comes month 6, when you realize the site is not bringing you customers and you have no idea how to fix it. Most Wix sites I get called to rebuild are 18 to 36 months old and have never been touched since launch.

Toronto agency

Right when: budget is $5K+ and you need a brand system.

If you are a 20-person company with multiple service lines, a real marketing budget, and you need brand guidelines plus a site plus social templates, a Toronto agency is the right call. They have the team to handle complexity. You will pay $5,000 to $20,000 for the build plus $200 to $500 a month.

The problem for a one-person plumber or a 4-chair salon is that you do not have the complexity an agency is built to serve. You are paying for 12 people to touch your project when you needed one good designer.

Your nephew (or any free option)

Right when: nephew is a working designer and motivated.

A real working designer in your family who actually wants to do this for you is the best deal in the world. Free or near-free, custom-built, and someone who genuinely cares about getting it right. If that is who your nephew is, take it.

The honest version is your nephew is a student or a hobbyist who promised it 8 months ago and the half-built site is still sitting in his Dropbox. That is the 80% case. If that sounds familiar, the next $500 is the cheapest fix to a problem that is costing you customers every week.

Ostra

Right when: small business, one or two services, custom feel, no agency budget.

Ostra is one person (me, Asad) building real custom websites for local businesses who need agency-level work without the agency price. $500 to build, $20 to $99 a month after. Done in a week. Custom design, local SEO, hosting, edits, all included. Cancel anytime.

Best fit: trades, salons, dental clinics, restaurants, cafes, auto shops, photographers, anyone running a small business in Durham or the GTA who wants their site to actually bring in customers and not just exist.
