Why Your Trades Website Isn't Showing on Google Maps

Plumbers and HVAC techs ask me this every week. Here are the 6 most common reasons your shop isn't on the map, and what to do about each.

Most local contractors I talk to have the same complaint. They have a Google Business Profile, they have a website, but when someone searches "plumber Pickering" they don't show up. Their competitor does. Why?

There are six common reasons. Most trade shops fail on three or four of them.

1. Your business category is wrong

When you set up your Google Business Profile, Google asked you to pick a primary category. Most contractors pick the first thing that sounds close. Wrong move.

If you're a plumber who also does drain cleaning and water heaters, your primary category should be "Plumber" - not "Drain cleaning service" or "Water heater store." Pick the broadest category that matches what most of your customers search for. Then add the secondary categories underneath.

Fix it now: log into business.google.com, click your business, update the primary category, save. Takes 30 seconds. Effects usually show up in search within 24 hours.

2. Your service area is too small or too vague

Google Business Profile lets you set a service area. If you serve all of Durham region but your service area only lists Pickering, you won't show up on map searches in Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa.

On the other hand if you list every city in Ontario, Google treats it as spammy and lowers your local ranking.

Fix it now: list 3 to 8 specific cities or neighborhoods that you actually serve. Be honest. Update it in your profile settings.

3. Your website doesn't match your Google listing

Google cross-references your Business Profile with your website. If your profile says you're in Pickering but your website never mentions Pickering, Google gets suspicious.

Fix it now: make sure your website mentions your primary city in the title tag, on the homepage hero, in the footer, and on at least one service page. If you serve multiple cities, give each one its own page.

4. You have no schema markup on your site

This is the technical one most contractors don't know about. Schema markup is structured data in your HTML that tells Google exactly what your business is, where it is, what hours, what services. Without it Google has to guess.

Sites with proper LocalBusiness schema rank significantly higher on Google Maps for their target city than sites without. Most local Pickering sites I look at don't have it.

Fix it now: ask whoever built your site to add JSON-LD LocalBusiness schema to your homepage. If they don't know what that is, run your site through ostra.studio/grade - the grader checks for schema and tells you if you're missing it.

5. You don't have enough Google reviews

Google Maps ranks businesses by relevance, distance, AND prominence. Prominence is largely measured by your review count and average rating.

Most trades shops with under 10 Google reviews rank below shops with 50+ reviews, even if the 10-review shop is closer and more relevant. It's the brutal truth.

Fix it now: text every customer you've served in the past 6 months your Google review link. Half of them won't respond. The other half will leave you a 5-star review because they remember the good work. You'll have 30+ new reviews in 60 days.

6. Your site isn't mobile-friendly

Google does separate mobile and desktop rankings. If your site is broken on mobile, Google deprioritizes you on mobile searches - which is where 70+ percent of local searches happen.

Fix it now: open your site on your own phone. Can you read it without pinching to zoom? Is the phone number tappable? Does it load in under 3 seconds? If you answered no to any, you need a mobile-first rebuild.

TL;DR

Go fix categories and service area in Google Business Profile right now (5 minutes). Get 20 new reviews in the next 90 days (text customers). Have someone add LocalBusiness schema to your site (or ask for an audit at ostra.studio/grade). Make sure your site works on phones.

Most contractors who do these 4 things move from "never on the map" to "top 3 result for their city" within 60 to 90 days.
